Mestreech is neet breid,
meh Mestreech dat is laank
Wäörd:Johan Pletzers -
muziek: Armand Preud'homme

Ès veer zoe bejein zien, is 't altied raak.
Veer zègke wel ins hommel, meine niks daovaan.
Drinke us e gleeske en veer zinge daan.

Mestreech is neet breid meh Mestreech dat is laank.

In November 1944 the all girls choir Oratoriom was established.   After a few years they changed the name into
"Ghesellen van den Sanck". (the Social club of the Song)  The choir sang in the beginning mainly in churches, and
soon men were allowed to join and their repertoire changed.   Now among other things they also perform Operettes.
In 1965 during the carnival sessions the 'Ghesellen van den Sanck' performed for the first time as 'de Zingende
Potsvrouwe.(the Singing Cleaning women)  Due to the enormous success the choir continued with this.

Mestreech is neet breid...mèh laank is the official clubsong of the 'Ghesellen van den Sanck' (the social club of the
song) now also known as 'de Zingende Postsvrouwe' (the Singing Cleaning women). It has grown from a club song
into a second anthem of Maastricht.
English
Maastricht is not wide but Maastricht it is long
Lyrics:Johan Pletzers -
music: Armand Preud'homme

Maastricht is not wide but Maastricht it is long
Maastricht is the city of the Social club of the Song.
Nothing is too difficult and nothing is too heavy.
Because friendship that is the strength of our choir

We  have a good time when we get together as friends
We like to enjoy ourselves
We forget the worries that sometimes get us down.
That is why we every Monday we get together again

We always have fun when we get together.
And once in a while we roast somebody.
Sometimes we have words but we don't mean anything by it.
We lift a glass and then we sing

Maastricht is not wide but Maastricht it is long
Nederlands (Dutch)
Maastricht is niet breed,
maar Maastricht dat is lang
Woorden:Johan Pletzers -
muziek: Armand Preud'homme

Daarom komen we elke Maandag terug.

etc
Paula told me that 'Mestreech dat is laank' does not refer to the shape of the city, but to the language.   In
spoken Mestreechs they draw our the sound of the words, almost like the southern drawl.
